So it may not technically be in Vorarlberg, but just a hop, skip and a jump across the border in Lindau is this great café. On a recent visit to the island I wanted to find a café for lunch that was not a traditional tourist trap and so I ventured away from the harbour and the main shopping street and stumbled upon Großstadt, nestled in the corner of an old square.
It was a beautiful spring day and the sun was shining and they have a few tables set up in the middle of the cobbled square next to an old fountain (so quaint and European) and so I grabbed the last free table and got ready to enjoy some good food.
Their menu is inspired by cities from all around the world and there is absolutely something on their menu for everyone, and caters well for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free diets. With such a big menu the first question I always wonder is have they sacrificed quantity for quality, but this is most definitely not the case here. So sit back and relax and take a culinary trip around the world without leaving your seat.
If breakfast is your favourite meal of the day like mine, they serve it all day here, with everything homemade and you have options inspired from cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Zurich and Istanbul.
However their other menu options were good enough to tempt me past the breakfast page. They offer baked sweet potato which I’ve never really seen on menus here before. Choose from toppings such as salmon and garlic cream, cream cheese or Mediterranean vegetables.
If you are craving something healthy (yes people do have healthy cravings) they have you covered and then some. Their salad options are immense and will fill you up for the whole afternoon. From a simple mixed salad, a capresse salad, to some really interesting options such as the “Salat Paris” served with a goats cheese and apple tower, honey and nuts, their “Großstadt” salad served with warm camembert, pears, seeds and mushrooms or sample the “Athen” salad with feta cheese, peppers and olives .
I went for the “Kunterbunt” salad which was served with a variety of fruit (banana, orange, pear and strawberries) nuts, seeds and mint and I opted to add some additional chicken. It was delicious. With so many different textures and the balance of sweet and savoury ingredients it made every bite a bit different and it was not swimming in dressing, which I find too often here.
Their wrap selection could also rival some of the best sandwich shops catering to all tastes; Greek, Mexican, Italian, Indian or Mediterranean.
If you are having not so healthy cravings then have no fear, your prayers are also answered are here in the form of spare ribs, or a bagel burger with a beef patty, bacon, onions and cheese. They also have a whole page of pasta dishes with lots of different options including pasta with avocado, cherry tomatoes and feta or mushrooms, garlic, rockets and seeds or with shrimps/tofu in a light lime-coconut-cream-Sauce.
This café is also good for catching up with friend’s day or night with a great drinks menu, live music events and tapas style dishes to share such as marinated feta and rocket, baked mushroom with a garlic dip, breaded camembert or tofu and prawns in coconut jackets.
The interior of this café/ restaurant is deceptively big with lots of tables, yet still manages to deliver a cosy atmosphere and to round off the experience the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.
So next time you take a trip to Lindau dare to venture away from the swarms of tourist at habour and you will be well rewarded.
